This not only saves resources in many ways but it's also good for you!
The local food movement is growing and we should embrace it. The river market is a great start, but it needs to be expanded and streamlined. I've found that it's difficult to get down there most of the time - the last thing I want to do is deal with parking and traffic. If there were a way to make it more accessible, it would benefit us all. The grounds of the Capitol would be a great place to have a farmers market occasionally.
We might also consider some local produce buying market. I've started a garden in my backyard recently and I hope to have a pile of excess produce once things get going. I'd happily contribute what I can grow for money or credits towards a bus pass, certificates from local businesses, etc. The produce could go to schools, hospitals, or just resold at the market. Additionally, I'd be more inclined to shop at local businesses/restaurants that support the system.
I wish the large grocery stores would get the idea that local foods should be offered, even if there isn't enough supply to satisfy the requirements of all of their stores.
